First Order Change vs. Second Order Change

Using scientific findings based on the latest research, we can create long-lasting change.   When we focus only on the behavior, we engage in a circular, surface-level approach to change which often only leads to momentary relief.  Behaviors associated with disabilities are often “innocent” behaviors and require educational and therapeutic interventions.  When we misinterpret these behaviors by reacting or otherwise taking them personally, there’s a risk that innocent behaviors will become socially motivated and new challenging social behaviors will be elicited in response to being “made” to stop the innocent behavior.

“We concede that every child is born with potentialities different from those of any other child.  Our objection to the teaching of the hereditarians and every other tendency to overstress the significance of the constitutional disposition is that the important thing is not what one is born with, but what use one makes of that equipment.”
